palette (acrylic or gouache paint):

- cadmium orange hue

- ultramarine blue

- Prussian blue

- cadmium red hue deep

- cadmium red hue light

- cadmium yellow hue light

- titanium white

several sheets of thin watercolor paper

die-cut punches in various shapes

scissors

glue

GETTING STARTED

1. First, select, mix, and apply the color that will be the constant center on watercolor paper. I chose orange because secondary colors are easier to shift than primaries; the more color components there are in your central color, the easier it will be to shift. (For orange, the cadmium orange hue or the cadmium red light hue works well, or you can mix your own from the yellow and reds.) Cut this orange piece into circles using your die-cut punch; you can also use plain scissors and a circle template (fig. 1).
